The Feeling of Public Speaking is a Roller Coaster

Speaking in front of people is an important skill that is used in relationships and careers. Many people become anxious and stutter when presenting. This feeling is normal. I am a confident speaker and enjoy presenting, yet every time before, I get that nervous pit in my stomach, and my palms get sweaty.  Think of public speaking as a roller coaster. Before you get to the highest point, you anticipate the rest of the ride. You let your mind overpower and all of your thoughts get jumbled together. When you’re on a roller coaster, most people don’t scream on the way up. The screaming takes place on the drop-down. On the ride up, all of your fear and emotions are locked...

Personal Public Speaking Tips

Here are four basic tips I've used to improve my speech impediment. I am no expert on this topic, but personal experience does teach a lot. Tip 1:Awareness: you can’t improve something if you don’t know what that “something” is. Record yourself speaking so you can watch your mouth move and hear your own voice. By listening to yourself, you will become aware of your exact word pronunciations. By being aware, you can now take action. I have also used an elbow tube from home depot as a telephone so I can hear myself speaking.  Tip 2:Don’t hide from the uncomfortableness. The more you put yourself out there, the more experience you gain. For example, by participating in clubs and extracurriculars...

My story: How I overcame my speech impediment

For most of my childhood, I suffered from a speech impediment in which I struggled with pronunciation. I had rhotacism which meant words containing the letters "R" and "W" were difficult to say. Starting in elementary school, I went to the school's speech therapist. That unfortunately did not help at all. Learning how to speak clearly is difficult when you can’t hear your own “problem.” My mother's a voice teacher, so she tried to teach me vocal exercises that would improve the clarity of my speech. Some progress was made over the years, yet nothing fully worked. Although my ability to speak was limited, I did not let this stop me from doing things I loved like public speaking and...

#4 quote

I'm reading this book Atomic Habits by James Clear. Right now I'm learning how to change habits that we do unconsciously (aka without awareness). Clear said we must be aware of what we are doing in order to change it. Page 62 says, "If a habit remains mindless, you can't expect to improve it." Self-awareness is a big part of learning how to break ineffective or "bad" habits. Nothing is bad though because even a "bad" habit satisfies you in the moment( just not so much in the long run). For example, eating a big ice cream isn't the best if your goal is to stay healthy and lose weight, but in the moment it makes you happy. But...

"Consistency is harder when no one is clapping for you. You must clap for yourself during those times. You should always be your biggest fan."@mostlyblessed insta This is your reminder to not give up on your goals because you feel like it's too late to start. You need to keep yourself motivated even if you have to force yourself at first. Make your own goals with set dates. Give yourself consequences if you don't reach them (make the goals reasonable and don't be too hard on yourself). Make sure you don't let missed goals and due dates pass over you because, without discipline, you lose consistency. Act as if your set goals are real-life deadlines. You can't rely on someone else...
